Cleared all codes and took the car (tt 225 53plate) and one came back which was "17861 Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor 1 (G235): Open or Short to Plus. P1453 3500 ". This seems to me atleast to tie in with not that great average mpg and random misfires/ occasional low boost in multi geared runs.

Just for future reference, the exhaust temp sensor isn''t the O2 sensor. It''s a seperate sensor all by it self right at the tip of the header pipe where the bolts to it. Thanks again!

Their recommendation: replace the 1st sensor. Estimate: 6 hours labor ( not easy to work in that area) cost about 900 (sensor costs 300). VW might participate in the repair.
