To all the spirited Classic BOXER-FANS:
Let me thank you very much for all your congratulation to my birthday – as years passes bye –All of your kind wishes and thoughts are very much appreciated!
In the mid September I attended the second time a 40th Anniversary- Rallye, for a BMW Motorcycle, this time the R 100 RS, held again in the US-State of Pennsylvania, as the 40th Anniverary Even the R 90 S in September 2014. This year more than 152 riders with their R 100 RS-machines gathered in Harleysville, Montgomery County /PA, hosted by Todd Trumbore, an active Motorcycle andBMW enthusiast and a bright and jolly good fellow, assisted by family members and friends, on his beautyfull property, to celebrate for two entire days a Bavarian Motorcycle, in the meantime not less than 41 years old.
Meeting and seing all these fans with all their interested enthusiasm in, I was asking my self what is it, that after all these years in possessing such Classic-Airhead like the R 90 S or theR 100 RS<, using and servicing it, maintaining, even customize, love and identifying with it, in showing and sharing, curirous to learn more about the background and secrets?
Well, there is the heritage of an old bavarian Company, started with airplane-engines in 1917, extending their engagement with motorcycle development and production in 1923, a motorcycle powered by an engine, layouted as a boxer-system, the famous-functional trademark, their is the Design-factor, starting 1973 with a comprehensible Design-language, prsented on the R 90 S, followed 1976 with the R 100 RS, the first, Full-Fairing-equipped Production Motorcyle.
But there must be more than that: I believe, these Motorcycles, developed in the `70ties, reflects a time, when products had been not extremely influenced and manipulated by market-demands and their marketing-conditions, carrying a very Spirit, the BOXER-SPIRIT! They had been developed, wether engineered or designed by a individual-interested and deeply involved employees of the BMW AG Development Centers. The Design-Process, created by myself, always based on an intuitive concept and their three-dimensional execution, representing all the engineering-intelligences, as well as the general demands of the BMW AG.
All this, is the factors, that these bikes are more than just „a Bike“ for a trendy, short-timed usage and tob e later traded in for another One: They became a part of your identity as personal-emotional „tools“ and lure for your steady interest and engagements.
